Math is Cool: How to Succeed

HOW TO SUCCEED IN MATHEMATICS

Design a positive attitude

Make sure you love the subject and its teacher; most students fail because they lack interest with either the teacher or the subject. You should accept that Mathematics is very basic and always applied in day to day life hence its an important subject that you must fare well in order to cope with the growing needs and the technological advancements in the society.

Prepare in advance for Class

v  Always read ahead of the teacher. You will familiarize yourself with the material ahead i.e. what will be addressed in the lesson.

v  Be in class several minutes before the lesson starts. Test yourself and have a recap of the previous lesson and try to remember as many ideas about it.

Always pay the best attention in class

Walk hand to hand with your teacher as he teaches in class; never accept to stare back at irrelevant things that will steal your concentration or attention during the class sessions.

What you write

v  Make a summary of the notes you have taken in class. They serve as quick reference during exam revision time.

v  Always rely on your notes when revising. Write short comments to remember in your future learning.

Textbooks

Make good use of your textbook, ensure you understand all what is given in the book e.g. questions and answers, examples, solved questions etc.

Use your Teacher

Mark every hard question you come across when in private studies to consult your teacher. I have relevant experience that whatever is explained by the teacher in close quarters is highly understood and retained.

Value your fellow students and seek their help

As the saying goes; “One man’s meat is another man’s poison” hence it could be what you are weak at is what your friend is good at, especially in terms of topics covered in class.

Choose who will be your seatmate in class

Select a student/pupil who will boost or supplement your understanding in maths and who you should compare answers with.

Form discussion groups with the best classmates in the subject

Make sure you adhere to timings planned for discussions and follow up the items discussed. Review on the work you studied with the group.

Be confident and honest while in class

Don’t fear what other classmates will say when you raise up your hand to ask or answer questions from the teacher. A student who asks or answers questions in class earns a strong grip of the content taught. He /she attains maximum participation and retention. Don’t pretend to have understood when you have actually not.

Practice! Practice! Practice!

Practice makes perfect; do thorough practice in mathematics whenever you get time. Don’t leave out some questions assuming that you are familiar to them as you may forget, do everything that may come in exams.
